The Toronto Maple Leafs Miscellany

Team History

An original six team, the Toronto Maple Leafs were founded in the year 1917. However, they would have three different names before settling on their current name. Originally the Blue Shirts, than the Arenas, the St. Patricks and finally the Maple Leafs. This final name was given to the team by Conn Smythe to honour a Canadian World War 1 regiment.

Maple Leaf GardensThe Maple Leafs would play their first years at the Arena Gardens winning two Stanley Cups there before moving to the historic Maple Leaf Gardens at its completion in the year 1931. The team would win eleven Stanley Cups in their new arena including their last in the 1966-67 season. In the year 1999 the Air Canada Centre would open and today is the arena that the team plays in.

If ever the Toronto Maple Leafs can be said to have enjoyed a dynasty it was during the 1960's. The team would win Stanley Cups in 1961-62, 1962-63, 1963-64, and 1966-67 seasons. The team has not known success since than and has not even made an appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals since their last Stanley Cup win.
